Kirketaket in Isfjorden (1439m)

"ski up ski down"
Towards KirketaketWelcome to the homepage for Kirketaket in Isfjorden, Romsdal. Kirketaket is a spectacular mountain for skiing, and the fantastic view over the Romdalsfjord and Romdal Alps is a much valued bonus. The Kirketaket Mountain was in 2004 voted among the top 10 mountains for Alpine touring (ski up ski down) by the magazine Fri Flyt.

The walk up to Kirketaket take about 3 to 5 hours. From the top, there is more than 1000 (3048ft) vertical meters of steep slopes down to the mountain dairy of Kavliheia which is situated at the foothill of the mountain. From Kavliheia and down to Isfjorden Shooting Range, which normally is the starting point for the trip, there is fun skiing. There is actually possible to ski all the way down to the fjord with only using your poles a little bit at the end.

On this web page you can read more about the mountain Kirketaket, get details about the trip up the mountain, look at pictures, follow up on snow depths, explore panoramic pictures and write in the 'mountainbook'. All of us in Isfjorden wish you a pleasant 'virtual trip' and hope that it will help you and inspire you when planning a ski trip or a regular hike to Kirketaket. Have a nice trip!

How to get there:
By plane, fly to Molde (SAS Braathens). By train to Åndalsnes (Raumabanen) or by car via Romsdalen from Dombås to Åndalsnes. From Åndalsnes harbour the reflection of the magnificent Kirketaket beams towards you in Isfjorden which is at the far end of Romsdalsfjorden. Isfjorden is situated 6 kilometers ( 3 ¾ miles) from Åndalsnes. From Isfjorden you head up towards the Shooting Range (Skytterbana), 3-4 minutes from Isfjorden, click on map above. March 20th 2008: Unfair!

March 20th: "Unfair" was the first word my two smallest children learned to say. And they learned it from their big sister. And now I am tempted to use the word myself. Here I am, the webmaster, out on a semisub in the North Sea. Snow measurements drops in to my mailbox. The last three days it has snowed 0,8 meter fresh new powder snow. I publish the snow measurements at this website, and I am happy for the good snow conditions in Isfjorden. But at the same time I feel it's a bit...unfair :-) By the way, want to see a video from Kirketaket? Click here...

Romsdal - The worlds most beautiful ski terrain!

American travel journalists are impressed by the mountain- and fjord landscape in Romsdal. They are invited by the company "FjordNorway" to experience winter in the Norwegian Fjords. And they mean this is the "most beautiful ski terrain in the world". Stephen Regenold, one of the journalists, have his own blog where he writes about the adventure.

At Vårseterhjellen (300 m - see map) above Bruhaugen, at the base of Steinberget/Kirketaket, there has now been put up a snowmeter. Here it will be read off snow depth and temperature in unequal intervals through the winter 2008. This may be good info for planning skitrips to Kirketaket and the surrounding mountains.

WARNING! Look at these pictures!
Do not exceed the edge at the top of Kirketaket. Never walk so far towards the edge that you do not know what you have below your feet. See picture to the left: The day before this picture was taken, a person left these tracks in the snow. The day after, the snow was just disappeared. The person should be very lucky to be alive today!!! There are also danger for avalanches at Kirketaket. Look at the picture to the right, from march 2006!
